Located next to the Jackson City Cemetery, this massive Catholic Cemetery is home to a very special mass grave; 27 of the 47 miners who died in the 1922 Argonaut Mining Disaster are laid to rest here. Another notable grave is that of Marie Suize aka Madam Pantaloons who dressed as a man to work the mines. I think of all the cemeteries in this area, this one gives the best snapshot of the lives and occupations of the people who worked and lived in the area.

You’ll also pass former mayors, authors, actresses, and a beautiful quilt of nationalities. When I visit I always feel like I’m seeing the true Los Angeles, not the gilded version. Something you should know about me is that I will travel long distances for graves, especially those of working women, if you know what I mean. I don’t quite remember how it was that I stumbled upon the story of Marie Holmes, the 21 year old English prostitute who in 1898 killed herself by drinking carbolic acid, but I knew I had to find her. Her story was beyond upsetting and even had a crazy twist. It’s said that she was suffering from melancholy, tuberculosis and missed her daughter who she’d had to leave behind.

"A lot of American history laid to rest here, dating back to the 1800s." Due to the rocky ground, digging graves was often too tedious so they opted to use dynamite. If that doesn’t say mining town, I don’t know what would.

That said, this is pretty average, and has its moments of humor sprinkled throughout. You’ll be left scratching your head at moments, and actually intrigued by the events going on at others. The family definitely makes questionable choices.

Israel has offered only an extended pause, vowing to resume its offensive once the first phase of the deal is over. The issue has repeatedly obstructed efforts by the mediators during months of talks. Netanyahu says he has ordered the military to prepare a plan for the evacuation of the southern Gaza town of Rafah ahead of an expected ground invasion. With more than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people sheltering in Rafah, the international community, including Israel’s top ally, the United States, has warned against any offensive that puts civilians at risk. Netanyahu said troops would enter Rafah, which Israel says is Hamas’ last stronghold, regardless of whether a truce-for-hostages deal is struck.

It’s not exactly tranquil given that the Hollywood Burbank Airport sits just on the other side of the train tracks. But Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery is worth a visit to see the ornate domed arch that once functioned as its grand entrance. Since 1953, the Portal of the Folded Wings has served as a mausoleum and memorial to early aviation pioneers, including a plaque dedicated to Amelia Earhart and a model of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

You can catch a glimpse of the shrine from the dead end on Valhalla Drive, but you’ll want to enter the cemetery from its Victory Boulevard gate for a closer look. The cemetery portion of this Altadena property appears more like a grove of evergreens, with gravestones that date back to frontier times. But the true attraction here is the mausoleum on the other side of the street, an extraordinary structure with frescoes across its arched ceiling and stained glass from the famed Judson Studios set into its cathedral-like facade. It’s definitely not “great” from a directorial pov but it’s a very fun watch.

The 44 acres of the cemetery are home to a 600-person mass burial pit for victims of the 1850 Cholera epidemic that swept that city. It’s also home to many notable burials including many politicians but most interestingly (to me at least,) it’s the final resting place of none other than Alexander Hamilton’s son, William, who died of Cholera in the city. Unlike the others, he was actually given a proper burial and an impressive monument. Another interesting section of the cemetery is Showmen’s Rest; the burial place of over 400 former circus and carnival workers. One of my favorite stories about this cemetery comes from the time of Prohibition when the mortuary contained a speakeasy and there are multiple stories of drunken parties in the cemetery. A walk through the cemetery today will have you passing city founders like John Strother Griffin, Jotham Bixby, and Isaac Newton Van Nuys.

The U.S. has repeatedly said it opposes the Rafah operation until Israel presents a credible plan for evacuating and protecting the estimated 1.5 million people seeking shelter there. Still, Hollywood Forever Cemetery has long served as Cinespia's hallowed home base, and it is a home it will soon return to with a bevy of blockbusters and beloved flicks in tow.

The story is a little convoluted and all over the place but the practical effects/gore were done super well and you get your moneys worth. Bob is the WORST and I was hoping he wouldn’t make it to the end. The war in Gaza has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. The fighting has driven about 80% of the population from their homes, caused vast destruction in several towns and cities and pushed northern Gaza to the brink of famine. The Israeli military plans to direct many of the 1.4 million displaced Palestinians in Rafah toward ‘humanitarian islands’ in the territory’s center.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials have referred in recent days to an ICC probe launched three years ago into possible war crimes committed by Israel and Palestinian militants going back to the 2014 Israel-Hamas war. The probe is also looking at Israel’s construction of settlements in occupied territory the Palestinians want for a future state. Hamas has demanded assurances that an eventual release of all hostages will bring a complete end to Israel’s nearly seven-month assault in the Gaza Strip and a withdrawal of its troops from the devastated territory.

A trip to San Francisco may raise the question, “Where are all the cemeteries? ” Well, in 1900 the city banned all burials due to overcrowding and in 1912, they took further action and actually kicked out the dead, exhuming and moving all bodies South to the city of Colma. What I love so much about this one is all of the handmade headstones for the beloved pets that made so many of the Military families stationed here happy when it was still an Army outpost. Although there’s not exact establishment date on the cemetery, we know it was probably around the 1950s.

His comments appeared to be meant to appease his nationalist governing partners but it was unclear whether they would have any bearing on any emerging deal with Hamas. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken was to arrive in Israel to advance the truce talks — which appear to be one of the most serious rounds of negotiations between Israel and Hamas since the war began. The deal is meant to free hostages, bring some relief to the population and avert an Israeli offensive into Rafah and the potential harm to civilians there. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Daily Pilot. Bishop said the cemetery also needs a city discount on its water bill and more protection from law enforcement.

After her death, the Madam of her brothel paid for her funeral and the other women who she worked with, pitched in to buy her a headstone … which would go missing. That was until a hiker in 2012 found it, 114 years after she’d died. The headstone has since been put back, along with a larger monument on top of her grave containing a poem. Her grave, it is said, was located by her daughter, who had come to say goodbye to her mother. This is just one incredible story from this forested coastal cemetery.

Israel has vowed to expand its ground offensive to Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians have sought shelter from fighting elsewhere. Israel says Rafah is the last Hamas stronghold, with thousands of fighters embedded there. The war has driven around 80% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million from their homes, caused vast destruction in several towns and cities, and pushed northern Gaza to the brink of famine. Israel has instead accused Hamas of genocide over its Oct. 7 attack that triggered the war. Militants stormed through army bases and farming communities across southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostages. A series of Israeli announcements in recent days about allowing more humanitarian aid into Gaza appears to be aimed in part at heading off possible ICC action.

The only people barred from entry were the Chinese, who were only allowed in the potters section. Additionally, they were the only ones who had to pay, $10 a body, to be buried in their own segregated section of the unknown. Eventually in the 1920s, a fully Chinese cemetery was created off site and it was reported that all bodies were to be exhumed from Evergreen and moved there. In 2005, a construction project near the Chinese section of the potters field revealed over 174 Asian male skeletons with various belongings like jade bracelets and opium pipes revealing the truth that not all bodies made it out.
